An Upcoming Strong Directory Contender

As anyone who has ever set out to promote a website knows, building backlinks can be one of the most difficult aspects of web promotion. One of the most tried and true methods is to submit your site to directories, preferably ones with decent PR. A lot of webmasters choose to do their directory submissions on a shoestring budget, but in doing so often overlook one of the best types of directories: paid directories. For example, DirSensei is a PR4 paid directory, with prices starting at $14.95. The advantage to purchasing a link on an all paid directory like this, is that each category only has a handful of sites listed. That means your site will enjoy a greater benefit from the backlink, since there are less sites listed there to dilute the PR.

To dig further into our example, let’s look at the example site in a little more depth. Now, when I look in the “Web Development” section, there is currently only one site listed there, and the category itself is a PR3. That means, if I were to spend $14.95 to get a listing there, I’d be splitting with only one other sponsored link. Now, if this were a free directory, you can bet there would be 20 or 30 sites on this page, making the backlink almost completely useless for PR purposes. That right there is one of the inherent benefits of going with a pay only link directory.

Another thing to look for are up and coming directories, or directories that are launching a major link building campaign. Again, http://www.dirsensei.com/ is a great example of this. Even though it is a few years old, and decently established, in the last few months the site has launched an aggressive link building campaign. Using web master tools to check out this sites stats, PR prediction tools are ranking this site at a PR6 next update. While that may or may not be the case, one great strategy is to try and identify either new start up directories that have a lot of potential/marketing, or established directories that are due for a PR increase, and then purchase links there before their prices are raised to reflect their new PR.
